Claire Dugué at work making a hurdy-gurdy (Continuous Rotation: the making and playing of a hurdy-gurdy)

Claire Dugué came from France to Britain to study instrument making in London 23 years ago and never left.

Based in Ramsgate since 2001, she is one of about 30 professional hurdy-gurdy makers in the world and has gained a high reputation for her instruments which she sells all over the world. Under the banner “Ramsgate Buzz” she has organised a series of concerts over the years and has introduced audiences to music that would normally not be heard live in Ramsgate.

In her talk she will present the hurdy-gurdy, its music, history and making. Though the roots of the instrument are medieval and it was kept alive thanks to its use in traditional music, it is today a modern instrument, played by musicians who are influenced by the whole gamut of different styles of music. The interaction between makers and players has resulted in great variety of instruments, always pushing the envelope of options, sounds and playing techniques; never a dull day in the workshop.

Claire will try to transmit some of her passion for this unique instrument to the audience with the help of music, slides and video as well as real live instruments.
