A talk by John Ray at the Sailors’ Church and Ramsgate Lifeboat Station
This talk will cover the history of lifeboating at Ramsgate since 1802 with emphasis on key events and rescues. It will also include the development of the RNLI and its boats into the modern era and an update about some recent dramatic rescues. There will be opportunity for questions and the talk will be followed by a short walk to the lifeboat station and a chance for a look around and see the boats (rescues permitting!) and the equipment used.
The talk will last an hour, and for the look around the Lifeboat station allow an additional hour.
Biographic note – John Ray served as a shore helper and crew member at Shoreham Harbour lifeboat station and for the last 10 years has been archivist and volunteer press officer at Ramsgate lifeboat station. He and his wife, Vanessa, are also RNLI Education presenters and have recently had a book about the history of Ramsgate lifeboat station published by the RNLI.
