The Ramsgate Meridian line is a much overlooked part of the history of the town. It can be traced north from the clock house through the town and lies on a longitude that is 5 minutes and 41 seconds faster than Greenwich Mean Time in London.
The Line, which was only ever inside the clock house building in the harbour was made from brass. It was stolen in the 1970s but accurate measurements had been taken, so it would possible to recreate it. As a meridian line it can be traced north from the clock house through the town and Mooch intends to recreate this line across the town for the Summer Festival. This is seen as a first phase project that will inform a permanent Ramsgate Meridian Line installation in the future.
The project aims to highlight this forgotten part of the harbour’s culture and acknowledge the resonance that this line carries for the wider town of Ramsgate, implying that we are ahead of the rest and have achieved a special status as a town. The history of the line has been neglected and we can now make it shine.
Mooch aims to engage with residents who live on the meridian line and contact every house holder and business to invite them to meet up and hear about their meridian and it’s history. We will also offer them a window sticker that they are “on the line” and bring together a broad spectrum of the community who are linked by this rare maritime curiosity.
Theresa Smith is the lead artist in Mooch, a Ramsgate and London-based award winning creative practice working on public realm projects for commercial clients, local authorities and charities since 2002. To date the portfolio includes landmark sculptures, hoardings, street furniture, memorial gardens and creative community consultation. Grass roots participation with local communities is embedded in the practice, ensuring the final artwork is relevant and valued.
Mooch has delivered a series of works for Ramsgate Arts, including the extremely popular Crown project in 2014 and PERFUGIUM MISERIS in 2016. Both projects were made possible with the help and support of many Ramsgate residents and local sponsors and were taken very much to the heart of those who got to see it as positive, iconic artworks for the town.
It is hoped that Ramsgate Meridian Line will achieve that same depth of appreciation.
