JESSICA LAUREN and SABINA DESIR
Between 1972 and 1974, just two short years, Stevie Wonder released 4 brilliant and groundbreaking albums: Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions and Fulfillingness’ First Finale.
After 10 years becoming increasingly frustrated at Motown Records having little or no creative involvement in his own work, he was finally freed from his contract on his 21st birthday and arrived on the doorstep of synthesiser pioneers Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil. A magical collaboration was formed.
As Robert Margouleff said in an interview in July 2018:
‘… He really was touched by the hand of God. I cannot explain his talent. It’s totally inexplicable. I don’t know where it came from or why he does it but he does. But I do know this: that his music changed my world and I think changed the world in general in a positive way…’
Sabina Desir and Jessica Lauren have put together a special quartet to pay tribute to this glorious phase in Stevie Wonder’s life with their own interpretations of songs drawn from the latter three of these masterpieces, Talking Book, Innervisions and Fulfillingness’ First Finale.
SABINA DESIR – VOCALS
JESSICA LAUREN – KEYS, VOCALS
SUMAN JOSHI – DOUBLE BASS
DAVID ‘BOOIE’ GALLAGHER – PERCUSSION
Internationally renowned US jazz pianist Kirk Lightsey described Sabina Desir as ‘one of the best jazz vocalists I have heard since Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter. Her intonation, her phrasing, and creative interpretation are unique and individual. A true spiritual daughter of the genre.’ She is an important figure on the Kent jazz scene: as a singer, a teacher and as the promoter behind The Jazz Sessions, bringing important jazz artists to the area.
Jessica Lauren is a keyboard player who has been a celebrated part of the UK jazz movement since the early 1990s. Her warm rootsy playing is influenced by soul, jazz, gospel, blues, Afro-Cuban rhythms and much more, and is always joyous, heartfelt and melodic. She has appeared with so many greats as well as having released four albums in her own right, the latest being Almería (Freestyle Records) in 2018.
Stevie Wonder’s music has been a huge part of Sabina’s and Jessica’s world since their childhoods, and it is with great pleasure that they are putting together this exclusive performance for the Ramsgate Festival of Sound featuring their own interpretations of songs from the golden era of this giant of popular music.
DJ Hooch will be on the decks before and after the live performance adding his super-classy selection of tunes to the occasion.
