A Talk by Terry & Janet Prue in The Wellington Room of The Falstaff Hotel
Ramsgate 1817 to 2017: Ups, Downs and Whatever Next?
Terry and Janet Prue have a passion for Ramsgate and are active in both Ramsgate Arts and The Ramsgate Society.
For this, our third involvement in the Festival, we will take a long hard look at Ramsgate: how it was, how it is and how it could be. Our historical context will take us back 200 years and we use the happy coincidence of 2017 being the 200 year birthday of Wellington Crescent to relate the wider changes to the town back to those in this one iconic building.
Over this period of our investigation Ramsgate has remained a major holiday destination but the nature and number of our visitors has been continually evolving. With each change there have been both positive and negative economic consequences.
Having completed this long view backwards we give an opinion on how things might evolve from here and what, we think, will help to bring Ramsgate back to greater prosperity. Can the past really help elucidate the future? We hope you will join us to consider the answer.
