For this year’s Ramsgate Festival Mooch is celebrating the fact that Ramsgate has it’s own Meridian Line which is 5 minutes and 41 seconds ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Here in Ramsgate we always knew we were ahead of everyone else and this confirms it.
For the Ramsgate Meridian 5.41 project a temporary line will be marked out on the pavements from the town boundary all the way to the Maritime Museum where the line is carved into the floor. Residents who live on the line have been invited to gather for a talk about the history of the Meridian that unites them.
The evening will be led by historian Terry Prue who has organised the Ramsgate Reflections programme of talks for this year’s Festival and has given many fascinating talks about Ramsgate. Terry will be joined by marvellous actor Clive Holland of Mischievous Theatre, who will bring the story to life for us.
Doors open at 6pm with the talk at 6.30pm. Drinks and nibbles until 8pm
You can buy a ticket for £5.41 online at Brown Paper Tickets. The first 10 guests on the night will receive a free 5.41 gift so don’t be late as spaces are limited at the venue.
There will be a donations box and raffle to help fund raise for this project which has been self funded by Mooch. You can also visit the Mooch website and help us via the donate button.
Theresa Smith is the lead artist in Mooch, a Ramsgate and London-based award winning creative practice working on public realm projects for commercial clients, local authorities and charities since 2002. To date the portfolio includes landmark sculptures, hoardings, street furniture, memorial gardens and creative community consultation. Grass roots participation with local communities is embedded in the practice, ensuring the final artwork is relevant and valued.
Mooch has delivered a series of works for Ramsgate Arts, including the extremely popular Crown project in 2014 and PERFUGIUM MISERIS in 2016. Both projects were made possible with the help and support of many Ramsgate residents and local sponsors and were taken very much to the heart of those who got to see it as positive, iconic artworks for the town.
It is hoped that Ramsgate Meridian Line will achieve that same depth of appreciation.
Part of the Ramsgate Treasures series of events.
