Toys Are Us

‘Toys Are Us’ invites visitors into a suspended reality where toys talk. But do we like what they say? Inspired by oddities found in local Emporiums and charity shops, it's no secret Ramsgate has a long term love affair with forgotten objects.

Time & Location

24 Aug 2024, 12:00 – 16:00

As Was Is Now Gallery, 27 Harbour St, Ramsgate CT11 8HA, UK

About the event

Inspired by humour and absurdity derived from the everyday, Rhea is fascinated by community and the unique ways it presents. She collects objects, photos, film and sound from various archival sources - with the intent to repurpose. Rhea has orchestrated a world of almost familiar through her work.

‘Toys Are Us’ invites visitors into a suspended reality where toys talk. But do we like what they say? Inspired by the many staring oddities found in local Emporiums and charity shops, it is no secret Ramsgate has a long term love affair with forgotten objects.

Expect an animated short film, including visuals and field recordings collected in Ramsgate.

“It was interesting to explore differences in dialect, examining the cadence of voices and pairing movement with this. Both the audio samples and toys/ceramic statues that are featured in the film, have both a familiarity and historical distance about them. This created an unexpected synchronicity between the characters and voices. It made me laugh.”.

Audiences should expect to observe and engage with sound, the toys will be in the room with us & larger than expected.
