‘Wave Machine’ – Craig Gell

Buoy on top of a wave on a graph with various sound waves

Live sea wave data, measured by an observation buoy at Goodwin Sands, is transformed into an evolving electronic soundscape. The buoy’s coordinates set the initial tuning of a drone with the number of seconds per wave controlling the tempo of an amplitude modulator. Wave height varies the pitch and timbre of sounds, while wave direction determines its movement across the stereo field. A tone heard at regular intervals signals sea temperature, with a tremolo effect increasing as the sea warms.
